What are cloud data warehouses?

Every day, people and companies generate a huge amount of content. If it weren’t for cloud technology, a lot would have to be irrevocably deleted, including valuable information. In this article, we gave you an overview of cloud storage types so that you can more easily understand which files should be sent to the cloud and what storage format to choose.

“What are clouds and what are they like”? – From that article, you may have learned that the cloud in a computer context can well be considered synonymous with the word “Internet”, that is:

cloud storage = Internet storage.

A repository of many different types of data, with many different ways to access it. The main thing is that you can access them from anywhere on the Internet.

We are not talking only about public service. It can be quite private or corporate.

Why keep something in the cloud

There may be many reasons to host data in the cloud, and it may have different priorities for different users.

For example, for individuals, it will be more important to be able to access data from different places on the Internet and from different devices, while for corporate users, reliability and storage costs may be more important.

This is not an exhaustive list of motivations for using cloud storage. For example, for enterprise users, transforming capital into operating expenses can also be important. Simply put, using a taxi instead of buying a company car.

What kind of storage can be in the cloud

It is possible to place on the Internet different data, differently organized, so also the storages can be different.

But to move on to the types of Internet storage you need to make one caveat: not only users can store data in them, but also applications, which in turn are used by people or businesses. For example, many communication programs

From a user’s point of view, an Internet storage may look like an additional local disk or a folder to house arbitrary files. The latter option is well known to numerous users of the services.

But there are types of Internet storage facilities that individuals do not usually encounter. Warehouses of these types are used by applications.

The most modern and universal type of cloud storage is object storage, which allows working with data in the most generalized way.

Cloud disks

Nowadays very often cloud drives are called services like Dropbox, OneDrive or Yandex, which is wrong. These resources are provided to users either through a web interface or as folders on the Desktop. In both cases, we can’t talk about drives. For example, they cannot be formatted to the desired file system.

But the storage disk space can really be represented to some computer via the Internet so that it is perceived as a local disk with which all disk operations will be available.

However, communication at this level requires intensive data exchange between the server and the disk device. If this communication is not fast enough, the efficiency of the disk device decreases. If communication is high-speed and highly reliable, cloud drives can be a convenient and versatile part of an enterprise information system.

Cloud folders

They are now often referred to as cloud drives. It’s already been said that this is wrong. However, a cloud folder is a useful and widely used resource, especially among individuals. For example, it makes it possible to use the same files from different devices connected to the Internet. It is also possible to share a folder for group work with files.

You can put a file into a cloud folder either through your browser and web interface, or through a special local folder that automatically synchronizes with the cloud storage. In the second case, the corresponding utility must be installed on the user’s computer.

In addition to accessing files from different devices, cloud folders provide storage for backups of these files. As a rule, the cloud infrastructure is built on hardware with very high reliability.

DBMS – database management systems

Database management systems have been in development and operation since the mid 1960s. Since then, many variants have been developed. DBMS on the basis of SQL queries to relational databases became very popular. In addition to them, recently began to appear and find the use of a database of unstructured or poorly structured data.

It is fundamental that the application requesting the data from the storage must be able to add these data to some application entity itself.

Object Storages

The object storage concept made it possible to provide universal processing of data of any type.

The idea of object data storage originated and was developed back in the 70s and 80s. But then it developed within the framework of separate closed projects, and now it is a widely demanded service, used in a variety of applications.

For interaction with cloud object storage a program interface (API) is used. In other words, the object is recorded in the storage not by dragging a file from one folder to another, but with the help of special commands issued by applications.

Today’s cloud storage facilities provide a high level of storage reliability, flexibility in storage location and description, high scalability and low cost per unit of storage.

Examples of cloud storage usage

  • Data backup systems and servers
  • Digital libraries
  • Distance Education Systems
  • CCTV systems
  • Video libraries
  • Archives of corporate and official documents
  • Public databases
  • Gaming platforms

It should be emphasized that this list is only a small part of the possible use of Internet storage.

Cloud Storage is a means of storing and retrieving any data (files, objects) located in any part of the Internet and accessible from any point on the Internet.
