Nowadays very often cloud drives are called services like Dropbox, OneDrive or Yandex, which is wrong. These resources are provided to users either through a web interface or as folders on the Desktop. In both cases, we can’t talk about drives. For example, they cannot be formatted to the desired file system.
But the storage disk space can really be represented to some computer via the Internet so that it is perceived as a local disk with which all disk operations will be available.
However, communication at this level requires intensive data exchange between the server and the disk device. If this communication is not fast enough, the efficiency of the disk device decreases. If communication is high-speed and highly reliable, cloud drives can be a convenient and versatile part of an enterprise information system.
They are now often referred to as cloud drives. It’s already been said that this is wrong. However, a cloud folder is a useful and widely used resource, especially among individuals. For example, it makes it possible to use the same files from different devices connected to the Internet. It is also possible to share a folder for group work with files.
You can put a file into a cloud folder either through your browser and web interface, or through a special local folder that automatically synchronizes with the cloud storage. In the second case, the corresponding utility must be installed on the user’s computer.
In addition to accessing files from different devices, cloud folders provide storage for backups of these files. As a rule, the cloud infrastructure is built on hardware with very high reliability.
DBMS – database management systems
Database management systems have been in development and operation since the mid 1960s. Since then, many variants have been developed. DBMS on the basis of SQL queries to relational databases became very popular. In addition to them, recently began to appear and find the use of a database of unstructured or poorly structured data.
It is fundamental that the application requesting the data from the storage must be able to add these data to some application entity itself.
The object storage concept made it possible to provide universal processing of data of any type.
The idea of object data storage originated and was developed back in the 70s and 80s. But then it developed within the framework of separate closed projects, and now it is a widely demanded service, used in a variety of applications.
For interaction with cloud object storage a program interface (API) is used. In other words, the object is recorded in the storage not by dragging a file from one folder to another, but with the help of special commands issued by applications.
Today’s cloud storage facilities provide a high level of storage reliability, flexibility in storage location and description, high scalability and low cost per unit of storage.
